Just got finished writing my letter for the round robin. My extended family has been participating in a round robin for as long as I can remember. I have vivid memories of my mom snatching up that packet of letters like a cherished Christmas gift and immediately sitting down to savor each letter with her cup of tea and probably a cookie too. As I think back on it I realize what a lifeline that must have been for her. We didn’t get a telephone until 1976, (and even after we did, long distance phone calls were for emergencies only!) there was no internet, and she rarely travelled in those days so hearing from her family by mail was her only connection to the ones she loved. It’s kind of an outdated practice now and all of the original letter writers are gone but we still send one around. More than once the packet of letters and pictures has gotten lost and someone revived it again. I try to get my letter written it sent on within a few days or people start getting worried. It really is a symbol of a time gone by and I think it is done out of respect for people that started it, but as long as I get it, I will continue to write my note and send it on.
