Of Books and Floods....

Recently a friend of mine commented that she hates to try out new authors for fear of being disappointed.  Those words have been gnawing at me ever since.  She is an avid reader so I find that sentiment really sad.  I LOVE discovering new authors, it’s one of the great joys of reading.  To limit yourself only to the tried and true ones seems really confining to me.  I fear more being disappointed by an author I’ve always enjoyed.   Jodi Picoult is a good example, I always buy her newest book but in the 20 or so that I’ve read of hers there were a couple I struggled to get through.  But c’est la vie.  Whether or not a story appeals to one personally has a lot to do with the topic at hand and some topics are not as interesting as others to me.  I didn’t particularly care for the one about an autistic boy for instance, but her last one that deals with several hot button issues in our society today captivated me.  Infertility, gay rights, conservative Christian views, love.  How can you go wrong with that?

In other news we are under a flood warning in Juneau! They are not sure why but speculation is there was a lake that has been trapped by the glacier that is now free. This morning the water level was 13.7 feet and rising.  Minor flood stage is 11.5 feet while moderate flood stage is 12.5 feet.  It’s a little disconcerting to say the least.  Here’s hoping it doesn’t get any worse.

  1. Did we come from the same gene pool? I also used to really like JP, and thought the one about the autistic boy was one of her best...and the last one was so disappointing to me...not because of the topics, but the choices they made....
Oh well, that's why there are lots of books out there...I am almost hesitant to recomment a book, but have you read Hunger Games (a triology)...suggested by your neice, Erica...it was totally captivating!

  2. I have read that her son just came out as gay and that may have prompted her to write on the subject. I have not read Hunger Games but I will check it out with my $50 card from the bookstore!! I want to check the one Barb's talking about too, Outliers. ANd you know we almost ALWAYS agree on books! Me

  3. I have a bad habit of finishing a book even if I don't like it. I'm struggling through one right now ("Middlesex") and have put it aside to start another one, "The Brethren" by John Grisham. It just happened to be on my shelf so I grabbed it on the way out the door on our camping trip. I always love the books you send me, Kathy. Unfortunately, the one I've set aside is not one you mailed me.

  4. P.S. You must be getting a huge amount of rain to cause the flooding, yes? Keep us posted.

  5. No the flooding is not due to rain or extremely warm temps. They think a lake inside the glacier spilled over but they don't know for sure. THank God it was not a super wet day today (it was actually sunny and beautiful) or the flooding may have been much worse. I have Middlesex in my to-read pile too. Haven't attempted it yet.

  6. LOL! Well, don't put "Middlesex" in the "send to Susan" pile. I'd love to hear your take on it when you finish reading it.

P.S. I secretly wish you'd take some photos around Juneau and post 'em up ~ especially of those sunny days!
